Rooky for iPhone

What is Rooky?

A wordless iPhone game that teaches preschoolers how chess pieces move — not how to play or win at chess. Everything is taught through animation, color, sound, and touch, with no reading or listening to instructions required.

Why is it called Rooky?

The rook is the first piece your child meets in the game — and "Rooky" sounds like "rookie," which is exactly what a beginner is.

Why isn't there any text or narration?

Because the children playing haven't learned to read yet. Rooky teaches through the channels a four-year-old already learns through: watching something happen, hearing a simple sound, and feeling a gentle vibration — one note and one buzz for every square a piece moves.

Can my child ever "lose"?

No. There are no timers, no lives, and no fail state anywhere in the app. Tapping a square a piece can't reach just makes it bump gently and spring back — no penalty, no message, nothing to feel bad about.

Does it teach chess strategy, or how to win?

Not yet, and that's on purpose. Rooky teaches the movement grammar first — how a rook slides, how a knight jumps — so that when your child is ready for real strategy, the moves are already automatic and chess itself becomes easy to pick up.

What happens when a piece is "captured"?

Landing on another piece wakes it up rather than defeating it — it startles, giggles, and bursts into stars. That's deliberate: the game is built to be non-violent from the ground up.

What age is Rooky designed for?

Preschoolers — children who can tap a screen but can't yet read. Nothing in the app requires reading, understanding speech, or any prior chess knowledge.

Does the app collect any information about my child?

No. Rooky has no accounts, no network access, no analytics, and no third-party SDKs of any kind. See the full privacy policy for the details.

Which devices does it support?

iPhone, running a current version of iOS.
